WORKSHOP 20: TIGHTEN YOUR HEADSET
Checking in with your own mental health and that of others is really important. This workshop will focus on ways to ‘tighten your headset’ and try and work on keeping a positive outlook on things and some strategies to manage the not so good time.
Whatever day of the week, being happy and staying positive isn’t always possible (or easy) so we will also look at what it is to have vulnerability, and that this is an entirely ok way to feel.
Next, we will touch on what resilience is, why it is important and how you can look to use this to your advantage.
If you put all these things together hopefully we can help you to build your own self-confidence!

WORKSHOP 19: BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME!
Let’s get adventuring! Today we’re off to City Dirt to meet with the legends that have helped make the space into what it is today.
On the drive in, we want you to think about all the different parts that might make this riding spot work and why it’s important for the local community and the larger community.

WORKSHOP 18: SHRED TOGETHER
Who likes riding their local spot? Is there something you would like to change? How do you think you might go about that?
This workshop we will investigate the relationship between the local council, community infrastructure and also the best way to communicate with the council.
The skills we might need to use for this activity include:
- Communication – both listening and talking clearly
- Planning
- Confidence – do you have the confidence to clearly communicate what you would like changed AND why?
- Budgeting – what will it cost to complete the upgrade and where might this money come from?
ON THE BIKE: Change it up!
We are heading to the skatepark but for something different, today we want you to think about an upgrade for the park you might want to make.
Have a think about what you would say to someone to prove to them that it’s needed.
INTEROCEPTION: SWEEPER!
Grab a broom, when you sweep the floor, think about your HANDS. Where did you feel it? What did you feel?
WORKSHOP 17: BUILD YO’ SELF!
Build it and they will come! This workshop we will look into how our local riding spots get built and what it takes to keep them up and running. We will also have a guest come in and give us a bit of background on what it takes to build riding facilities.
If we use local dirt jumps as an example, think about how they got there in the first place. Here are some points to get you started:
- Who’s had the idea?
- Who owns the land it sits on?
- Who built it?
- Did they need permits – what are permits?
- Who decides what it looks like?
- What kind of machinery is needed?
These are just some of the aspects that go into creating and building riding infrastructure (parks, trails, bike paths). Try and see if you can do some research and come up with some others!

- Retail – working in sales
- Bike mechanic

WORKSHOP 14: GET STOKED!
Getting ‘active in your community’ can mean many things. This workshop we will look at why we should promote bike riding in the community and how we might go about it.
Lighthouse Youth Projects run many different types of programs and workshops. Our Get Stoked! sessions are designed to engage young people like yourselves, encourage them to use their local riding spots and also get friends and family involved.
So what does it take to stage an event? Let’s look at just some of the steps:
1. PLANNING
- Where / When / Who / Where
- Timings / Schedule
- Other aspect such as permits, materials, facilities (toilets are important!!)
2. PROMOTE
- How do we tell people our event is on?
- Do they need to buy tickets?
3. STAGING – The big day!
- Set up
- Check-in/registration – if you need it!
- Run sheet – instructions if required
- Pack down
4. THANKYOU’S AND WRAP UP
- Acknowledge anyone who has helped you out
- Thankyou’s to people who attended

WORKSHOP 13: RIDE TO THE BANK!
How to turn one person’s trash into your cash… and help the environment all at the same time. In this workshop, we will begin our first group project – a bicycle reno!
Bikes can have so many benefits! Some of them can be:
- Low-cost transport
- A pathway to better health and a way to improve mental health
- A way to reduce emissions and help the environment
- BEING SUPER FUN!
We will also highlight how the act of repairing something can be a way to create additional cash.
Many people just want a bike that is ready to ride, if you can learn the skills to repair a bike and get it up and running you are providing a service to others that you can charge money for.
***think about the money you are spending that you don’t really need to, compared to what you might be able to save to buy a bike part.

When we complete a simple ride around the park think about how your arms feel. Where did you feel it? What did you feel?
WORKSHOP 12: GET Amongst IT!
We’ve talked about the different riding communities and how they can work together. This workshop we will find out a little more about different disciplines and the cycling clubs!
Here are some local cycling clubs in the Greater Adelaide area:
- The Cove BMX Club
- Inside Line MTB Club (Statewide)
- Adelaide MTB Club (Statewide)
- Gravity Enduro of South Australia (you guessed it, statewide)
- South Coast Cycling Club (for Road Riding)
Cycling clubs are small (or large) organisations that hold regular events. These may be races or just social events, to be included in these events you can become a member which is sometimes like joining one big bike family.
BMX has racing, freestyle, flatland and street. For each type, the bike itself may be different in its look and design and the skills that the rider has will have varied strengths and weaknesses. The racing discipline of BMX is the one most likely to be associated with a club.
VIDEO: BMX RACE
ON THE BIKE: RACE TIME!
Today we are going to go to your local BMX track and have a look at the features, what makes it different from our local pump track and jumps and also try and see what a race might look like.
